ARTISTS - Sami Mohammed

Born in 1943 in Kuwait, Mohammed was granted a scholarship to study Sculpture At te Cairo Faculty of fine arts graduating in 1970. In 1976 he pursued higher studies in anatomy and sculpture at the Johnson technical institute in New Jersey. Mohammed has exhibited in Biennials and Triennials worldwide. He has won many awards including silver Medal at the Annual Exhibitions of the Kuwaiti association of Fine Art, 1970; Bronze medal at the Annual Exhibition of fine Art, 1971; National Prize Diploma, at the 3 rd Painters Festival, Cannes Sur Mer, France, 1973; 1 st prize at the Annual Exhibitions of the Kuwaiti association of Fine Art, 1976 – 1977; Fifth Arab Artists Exhibitions, Golden (shira’) prize, 1977; 1981 – 1985, 1 st prize at the Seventh and ninth Arab Artist exhibition, 2000 and 1 st prize, Tehran Islamic Biennale. Primarily a sculptor, Mohammad works in many mediums to portray various themes such as motherhood, childhood, the Boxes series, the Grey period and his Stop series that often depict the suffering of the human being and the suppressed freedom of the individual in many of the developing countries. His work is present in many important collections around the GCC, and in the Museum of Sharjah, where a pavilion was dedicated to hi work in 2001. In 1967, along with other Kuwaiti Artists, he established the Kuwaiti Association of Fine Arts and has worked extensively with local Kuwaiti artist of preserving the popular art of the sudou weaving techniques.
